Stage 3

Stage 3: Understanding implications of intersectionality

In the previous stage, the project team has been sensitized on relevant dimensions of diversity, and why it is important to take those into account when scaling.

In this stage, you and your project team will answer the following questions:

  • What dimensions of diversity are (or appear to be) most relevant, and how does this intersect with gender?
  • What are the most relevant categories or segments of people within these dimensions?
  • What potential negative consequences are most significant and likely to occur for which segment of people?
  • What segments of people should we focus on when trying to prevent or mitigate negative consequences?
    Stage 3 Goals

Intersectionality

  • Duration of activity: 10 minutes
  • Materials needed: Stable internet connection, projector

Instructions for the facilitator

  • Go through the “Intersectionality”  slides before you meet with your team. Make sure you understand the concepts and terms that are used.
  • At the end of the presentation, take some time to answer questions and facilitate a discussion.

Persona Activity (optional)

  • Duration of activity: 45 minutes
  • Materials needed: Persona Map print outs or Word Docs (for virtual settings)

Instructions for the facilitator

  • This is an optional activity. We recommend doing this activity with your team if you have ample time and if you think it would be helpful for all team members to have a better picture of innovation users in their minds.
  • Go through the “Persona Activity” slides with the team. Highlight that this is a very context-specific activity.
  • Present the example persona map, then split the team into groups of 3. Each group should be assigned a different “priority dimension” identified in the Stage 3 Miro Board.
  • Have each team fill out the persona map, then present it to the full team for their feedback.

Congratulations!

You have completed Stage 3 of GenderUp. In the next stage, you will guide your team through the adaptation of their Scaling Strategy.
